Best Kids Camping Gear for South Bay Family Camping 2026

Spring is the best time to camp in Southern California — wildflowers are out, temps are mild, and the crowds haven't hit yet. Here's what you actually need to bring kids camping from the South Bay.

South Bay families have excellent camping within an hour or two of Manhattan Beach. Leo Carrillo State Beach Campground is 45 minutes up PCH and books out fast for spring weekends — grab reservations at reservecalifornia.com as soon as they open 6 months ahead. Point Mugu State Park and Malibu Creek State Park are also popular with South Bay families. For something further, the Santa Monica Mountains offer Pt. Mugu backcountry options.

Spring camping temperatures run mid-50s overnight, high-60s to low-70s during the day. Kids need gear rated for those temps — not summer sleepover gear.

1. Coleman Kids 50°F Sleeping Bag

4.6 stars

The Coleman Kids is the best entry-level sleeping bag for Southern California spring camping. It's rated to 50°F, which is right for Leo Carrillo and Point Mugu spring nights. Envelope-style (not mummy) so kids don't feel claustrophobic. Machine washable, which matters a lot after a weekend of s'mores and campfire smoke. Available in fun colors that kids actually get excited about.

2. Black Diamond Astro 300 Kids' Headlamp

Every kid needs their own headlamp. Full stop. It's the camping item they're most excited about, it gives them independence at the campsite, and it's genuinely essential for nighttime bathroom trips. The Black Diamond Astro 300 Kids is bright (300 lumens), has a red night-vision mode, and the headband fits kids without sliding around. The colored lenses are a bonus — kids love switching between them. Runs on AAA batteries that are easy to swap at camp.

3. Deuter Fox 30L Kids' Backpack

For day hikes from the campsite — and there are great ones at both Leo Carrillo and Malibu Creek — kids need their own pack. The Deuter Fox is the best kids' hiking backpack at this size. It has a back system designed for children's torsos (not just a smaller adult pack), padded hip belt, hydration sleeve, and enough room for their layers, snacks, and a water bottle. Ages 7 and up can comfortably carry 10-15 lbs. Makes kids feel like real hikers rather than passengers.

4. Therm-a-Rest Z Lite Sol Sleeping Pad (Kids' Size)

A sleeping pad matters more than most parents realize for camping comfort, especially for kids who sleep hot or light. The Therm-a-Rest Z Lite is accordion-fold, lightweight, and has a reflective coating to bounce warmth back. Kids' size fits under a sleeping bag and provides real insulation from cold ground — which at spring coastal campsites stays chilly overnight. Virtually indestructible. We've seen these survive a decade of family camping.

5. CamelBak Kids' Eddy Water Bottle (0.4L)

Kids' hydration is the thing most parents underestimate on camping day hikes. The CamelBak Eddy Kids bottles have a bite-valve that kids use without thinking — they just bite and drink rather than unscrewing a cap. The 0.4L size is right for ages 4-7; bump to the 0.6L for older kids. BPA-free, dishwasher safe, available in about 15 colors so each kid can have their own. If your kids will be hiking the trails behind Leo Carrillo or the Backbone Trail, these go in every pack.
