Best Kids Bikes & Scooters for South Bay LA in 2026

By The Family Scout Gear Guide Updated March 2026

If you live in the South Bay, you already know: this place was made for kids on wheels. The Strand runs 22 miles from Pacific Palisades all the way to Torrance Beach. Polliwog Park, Ernie Howlett, Alondra — flat, paved paths everywhere you look. Spring rolls in early here, and by March most South Bay families are already spending weekend mornings riding to brunch or bombing down to the beach. The right bike or scooter makes those mornings a lot more fun (and a lot less of a meltdown).

Here's what's actually worth buying in 2026, broken down by age and use case. We've focused on gear that holds up to salt air, fits South Bay riding conditions, and doesn't fall apart after one season.

Balance Bikes: The Right Start (Ages 18 months – 4 years)

If your kid is under 4 and hasn't started yet, skip the training wheels entirely. Balance bikes teach kids to coast and steer before they worry about pedaling — and the transition to a real bike later is dramatically faster. Most South Bay kids who start on balance bikes are riding pedal bikes independently by age 3 or 4.

Pedal Bikes: First Rides to Strand Ready (Ages 4 – 10)

Once your kid is ready for pedals, you want something light enough that they can actually control it, and durable enough to survive being thrown in the garage next to the boogie boards. The sweet spot for most South Bay families is a 16" or 20" bike in the $150–$250 range. Go cheaper and you get heavy department-store bikes that are a pain to ride. Go higher and you're into enthusiast territory that most kids will outgrow before it matters.

Kick Scooters: Fastest Way to Get Around Local Parks (Ages 5+)

Scooters are having a moment in the South Bay. They're lighter than bikes, easier to store, and honestly faster on flat terrain for older kids. The path along the beach from Hermosa to Manhattan is basically made for a good kick scooter. Two picks depending on age and budget:

Electric Scooters: For Older Kids & Pre-Teens (Ages 8+)

Older kids who want more speed on flat terrain — think The Strand, or the bike path past the Hermosa Pier — are increasingly on electric scooters. A few things to know before you buy one: California law requires a helmet for anyone under 18 on an electric scooter. Speed-limited models (under 15 mph) are appropriate for most kids; anything faster is genuinely risky on crowded beach paths.

Helmets: Non-Negotiable (All Ages)

California requires helmets for kids under 18 on any bike, scooter, or skateboard on public paths. Beyond the law, The Strand and Manhattan Beach paths can get crowded on weekends — a collision happens faster than you think. Get a MIPS helmet. The extra $20-30 is worth it.

Best Local Spots to Ride

Once you have the gear, here's where South Bay families actually go:

  • The Strand (Manhattan Beach to Torrance Beach): Paved, flat, and gorgeous. Best on weekday mornings before it gets crowded. The section between Hermosa and Manhattan Pier is particularly good.
  • Polliwog Park (Manhattan Beach): Paved loop around the park, totally flat. Great for beginners and little ones on balance bikes. Also has a playground and pond — easy to make a full morning of it.
  • Ernie Howlett Park (Rolling Hills Estates): More elevation here, good for older kids who want some challenge.
  • Alondra Park (Lawndale/Gardena): Flat loop around the lake, less crowded than beach paths. Good if you want to avoid weekend beach traffic.
