Spring Break 2026

Best Spring Break Activity Kits for South Bay Kids 2026

Spring break in the South Bay is two weeks of "I'm bored" interrupted by beach days. These activity kits fix the indoor stretches — hands-on, screen-free, and actually good for kids ages 4 through 12.

South Bay schools typically break the last two weeks of March and first few days of April. That's a lot of time. Manhattan Beach, Hermosa, and Redondo are great for outdoor time when it's sunny — but marine layer mornings and the occasional rainy day mean you need indoor backup plans. Activity kits are that backup.

We tested and researched kits across age ranges. These are the ones that actually get used instead of shoved in a drawer.

1. Kiwi Co. Panda Crate (Ages 0–4)

KiwiCo is the gold standard for kids' activity subscriptions, but their individual kits also ship on Amazon. The Panda Crate targets toddlers with sensory and motor development activities. For spring break, it's a lifesaver for parents with a younger sibling who can't keep up with older kids' activities.

2. National Geographic Mega Science Kit (Ages 6–12)

4.7 stars, 8,000+ reviews

This kit packs in 70+ experiments — crystal growing, volcanoes, slime, fossils, and more. For South Bay kids who go to Mira Costa, Redondo Union, or Peninsula High School, STEM curiosity starts young. The National Geographic kit has enough content to fill multiple spring break days and is genuinely educational rather than just "play." Best for ages 8 and up, though 6-year-olds can do it with a parent.

3. Creativity for Kids Shrink & Link Jewelry Kit (Ages 7+)

A South Bay parent favorite in the Facebook groups: kids design jewelry on special plastic, then you bake it in the oven and it shrinks down to a hard miniature. Sounds simple but kids are obsessed. The kit includes enough materials for multiple sessions and the results are something kids actually want to wear. Great for girls and boys who like making things.

4. America's Test Kitchen Kids Cookbook (Ages 8–12)

Spring break is a good time to actually teach kids to cook. This cookbook from America's Test Kitchen Junior is the best one on the market — it explains the why behind cooking techniques, not just the what. Kids make real food: pizza dough, cookies, pasta, stir fry. After a morning cooking session, they can bring the results to the beach for lunch. The Hermosa Beach strand picnic gets significantly better when your 10-year-old made the food.

5. Melissa & Doug Deluxe Easel (Ages 3+)

If you want one activity station that works across multiple spring break mornings, a double-sided easel is it. Melissa & Doug's deluxe version has chalkboard on one side, whiteboard on the other, and a paper roll feed. Kids can paint, draw, practice letters, or just go wild. It's big enough that two kids can use it simultaneously, which matters if you're trying to keep multiple ages occupied at once. Bonus: set it up on the patio on a sunny South Bay morning and it doubles as outdoor art time.

6. Osmo Genius Starter Kit (Ages 6–10)

Osmo is the bridge between screen time and hands-on learning. Kids use physical tiles, drawings, and tangrams that interact with iPad games. It covers math, spelling, problem-solving, and creativity — and it feels like playing rather than learning. The Genius Starter Kit is the best entry point. Expensive upfront but covers hundreds of hours of content. A good option if you want to give kids some screen time without it being purely passive.
